YOUR FEED BACK AND SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME! ALSO ANY GOOD CORPORATE CONTACTS, PRIVATE PATRONAGE, VOLUNTEER SERVICES TO THIS END ARE VITAL.!
.
Here are my initial thoughts:
.
1.The award will be judged independently by a jury selected from qualified members outside our Caribbean region.
.
2. There will be five categories:
- picture book text
- picture book illustrations
- 6-8yrs illustrated reader up to 1,500 words
- 9-11 yrs illustrated reader up to 2,500 words
- young teen novel or short story collections 20,000-40,000 words
.
3. A prize in any or all categories may not be awarded if the judges do not consider any of the submissions worthy of it.
.
4. Depending on the sponsorship we solicit, prizes may include cash, and / or an all expense paid trip to an SCBWI conference or a combination of the two.
.
5. Regional Advisors and assistant RAs will not be eligible.
.
6. An independent jury will be chosen to read all submissions and qualify the best five in each category as 'finalists' which will be judged.
.
7. A call for submissions will be publicized and circulated with a due date, guidelines and submission policy outlined. Only SCBWI members will be eligible.
.
8. This will be a region wide call and I am in the process of deciding whether this will include our sister region Caribbean North.
.
9. It also needs to be determined whether this will include previously published writers or only unpublished writers. Depending on the amount of money we pull together a special award can be set up for for previously published writers. Since this is new ground for the Caribbean I am in favor of having only unpublished writers compete for the grant in its first year.
.
10. The aim is to have an annual purse awarded, so that Caribbean talent will get moving and do the work of expressing themselves. If writers and illustrators know this is available they will be encouraged to work.
.
11. SCBWI does not encourage self-publishing for obvious reasons and we will not get in to actually publishing the winning works. The long term vision is that quality work and talent may then receive exposure internationally and improve their odds of being published by an established publishing house. SCBWI Caribbean will do everything it can to eventually market and promote the awards and its winnersto the wider publishing community.
.
REMEMBER, THIS IS IN THE DRAFT STAGES.
